Reboot Your Mood

In a bad mood? Try performing an altruistic task, says psychologist Caroline Adams Miller.

Think you’re destined to respond the same way to the same old triggers? While understanding the science to turn around your bad mood can be helpful, as well as mindfulness practices, sometimes lending a good old helping hand does the trick, too.

Caroline Adams Miller is a Maryland-based author and psychologist specializing in Applied Positive Psychology. She says one of the easiest ways to rebound from a bad mood is to help someone out.

From the Fast Company article:

Altruistic behavior gives you the ‘helper’s high’ and there are many ways to do something generous or kind in a few short minutes.

Miller adds that it can be something as small as thanking a colleague for their help on a project, or going out of your way to help someone else. Ultimately, taking the time to do something nice for another person helps change your mindset.
