VIDEO: Why the military needs mindfulness

What can meditation do for soldiers? Elizabeth Stanley in conversation with Congressman Tim Ryan.

Back in 2010, an increase in prescription drug use and addiction issues within the U.S. military prompted the Army Surgeon General to create a task force to explore pain management and alternatives to narcotics. Recently, U.S. veterans have started to talk about how meditation meditation practices have helped them cope with trauma and stress. Researchers have started projects around mindfulness and PTSD. But could mindfulness be a part of policy-making in the future?

In this trailer for his book A Mindful Nation, Congressman Tim Ryan and Elizabeth Stanley, founder of the Mind Fitness Training Institute (MMFT) discuss what mindfulness brings to the table for those serving in the military. The video (below) is about 11 minutes long.
