Halliwell writes about the quiet “revolution happening in America”—quoting Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan, who has been very vocal about his own positive experience with mindfulness, and his support of its use to benefit healthcare, schools, the military and society as a whole. Not only has Ryan been an advocate, but he’s even recently published his ideas in a book, A Mindful Nation.
However Halliwell says what’s important is not so much what Ryan is saying (as others have said the same), but who he is—”an elected politician in Washington passionately advocating meditation as a way to face some of the most serious issues facing his country.” Halliwell calls Ryan an “important radical”:
Despite the assertion of traditional American values, Ryan may actually be an important radical, willing to use his influence to trigger a shift in cultural attitudes and practices, leading perhaps to less pursuit and more happiness.
Halliwell also writes about the science supporting mindfulnes meditation, and the commonly secular discipline’s Buddhist roots.
