Charles Johnson is a novelist and essayist who has won numerous awards, including the Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships and the National Book Award. He is Professor of English at the University of Washington. This story is from his recent short story collection, Dr. King’s Refrigerator, published by Scribner. He has also written a novel, Dreamer, based on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
