Making Mindfulness Through Art

The exploration of the role art therapy can play in mindfulness, meditation and behavioral therapy was the focus of a recent symposium in Dublin, Ohio recently.

The Buckeye Art Therapy Association (BATA) hosted its 29th symposium on September 24 and 25 at the Embassy Suites Dublin. Co-sponsored by Cuyahoga Community College, the conference, entitled The Making of Mindfulness through Art, featured keynote speaker Michael Franklin, PhD, ATR-BC, a professor and core faculty for Naropa University's Transpersonal Counseling Psychology Department and director of Naropa's graduate art therapy program in Boulder, Colorado. The symposium offered a range of workshops with hands-on experiences and highlighted the use of art therapy in the practice of mindfulness, meditation and dialectical behavioral therapy. BATA is recognized as one of the oldest and largest state chapters of The American Art Therapy Association. Numerous medical, mental health, hospice, corrections and educational institutions in Ohio employ art therapists to help their clients.
