Little Meditation, Big Benefits: Study
The positive effects of long-term mindfulness meditation practice on attention and executive functioning have been effectively established in the field of psychology. However, a recent study published in Consciousness and Cognition investigated what effect brief mindfulness meditation training has on those faculties.
The study examined what the effect of four mindfulness meditation training sessions would have in comparison to a control group whose task was to listen to a recorded book. It was found that both interventions were effective at improving mood, however only the mindfulness group experienced reduced fatigue, anxiety, and increased mindfulness. Furthermore, the mindfulness group exhibited significant improvement in visuo-spatial processing, working memory, and executive functioning.
The study states that while these findings reflect the long-term effects of mindfulness meditation confirmed by previous studies, it is not meant to suggest that the extent of these effects equate with long-term mindfulness training.
