We offer personal stories, news-you-can-use, practical advice, and insights that speak to anyone from novice meditators looking for guidance to corporate managers exploring new ways to cultivate workplace engagement and fulfillment. Our audience learns from leaders in the field about effective techniques for mindful living, and the science that points to their benefits.

We all have the innate ability to be present, composed, and to pause before we overreact to the challenges of our busy lives—and that’s the ground of mindfulness. With some guidance and training, mindfulness can develop into a way of living that brings greater focus and effectiveness as well as kindness and caring into everything we do. Both science and experience demonstrate how being mindful brings positive benefits for our health, happiness, work, and relationships.

We see mindfulness as a unique and profound approach to social change, and our work as a social innovation initiative. Mindfulness is entering the mainstream and it presents an historic opportunity to transform society. It is accessible and everyone can benefit from its potential for promoting individual wellness, healthy relationships, and a more mindful and caring world.
Mindful seeks to help connect the emergent elements in the mindfulness community, from the heroic efforts of the leaders in the field to all those new to mindfulness who seek to learn more. The result will be greater personal benefit as mindfulness practices become more mainstream, and greater benefit to society as the underlying values of kindness and compassion permeate our culture.
Mindful’s purpose is to inform, inspire, guide, and connect all those who want to live a mindful life, to enjoy the scientifically supported benefits of mindfulness practices, and to create a more mindful and caring society.
Without the visionary commitment of the Hemera Foundation, Mindful.org and Mindful magazine would not be where we are today. A partner from the launch, Hemera has provided strategic guidance, expertise, and generous support that have enabled Mindful to weather the challenging stages of starting up a media and community building enterprise.
Hemera Foundation, founded by Caroline Pfohl, is a philanthropic organization dedicated to introducing secular contemplative views and practices into mainstream society, focusing on education, women and children, and the arts. Their programs promote healing, wholeness, and compassion on individual and collective level, and do so by identifying and providing resources, training, and tools that allow individuals to reconnect with the innate goodness and sanity of the human person.
Currently Hemera is engaged in a far-reaching early childhood education project, as well as providing contemplative practice opportunities for artists and educators.
The 1440 Foundation, founded by Scott and Joanie Kriens of Silicon Valley, is a leading co-creator and supporter of mindfulness-based initiatives across North America. They have been an important partner for Mindful, collaborating with us on ways to help grow the mindfulness field. 1440 provides valuable counsel to Mindful on business and strategy, as well as funding.
The 1440 Foundation’s mission is to support programs and best practices that cultivate authentic relationship skills in education, wellness and the workplace. They promote fitness on all levels—body, mind, inner, and relational—through a commitment to programs that support self-awareness, authenticity, trust, and empathy. Currently they are developing the 1440 Multiversity, a learning community serving as a catalyst for the connection to your best self.
Who We Are
Editor-in-ChiefA longtime professional writer, editor, and trainer specializing in applications of mindfulness and awareness to everyday life, Barry is editor of The Mindfulness Revolution and served as developmental editor for Congressman Tim Ryan’s books, A Mindful Nation and The Real Food Revolution. From 2008 to 2012, he wrote for the “Mindful Society” department of Shambhala Sun magazine. He is also coauthor of The Rules of Victory, an extended commentary on Sun Tzu’s Art of War.Deputy EditorClaire has been working in media for years, transitioning from documentary film to print. An observer by nature, she holds degrees in sociology and journalism and has encountered her most meaningful lessons in mindfulness while playing with food and with words. At Mindful, Claire oversees production, working closely with the art department to keep the magazine on track. She spearheads research and content development initiatives to continue moving the magazine forward alongside the ever-evolving media landscape.Associate Publisher, Advertising & PartnershipsClaudia joined Mindful after several years in international B2B publication sales and a decade of experience designing and facilitating leadership events. A lawyer by training, she began meditating at a young age and has always found ways to bring mindfulness into her work. She balances her career with a healthy dose of family life and a few weekends a month fronting an indie folk/barnrock band.PublisherJames has been a magazine and trade book publishing professional since 1973. He has spearheaded Mindful’s community-building efforts within the mindfulness movement for the past eight years, and is currently on the Advisory Board of the Center for Mindfulness at UMass, and the Boards of Directors of the Mind Fitness Training Institute (MFTI) and the Institute for Mindful Leadership. He has taught leadership training programs and mindfulness in North America and Europe since 1978.Art DirectorJessica joined Mindful in 2012 as one of its founding team members. She brings a wealth of experience to her position as art director, including almost 15 years designing for print publications. Trained in graphic design, English literature, and journalism, Jessica was born into a family where meditation was practiced on a daily basis. Mindfulness has infused every aspect of her life, and she considers her work at Mindful to be a natural extension of her lifelong mindfulness practice.Advertising RepresentativeKilah Rolle joins the Mindful team with international experience as a newspaper reporter, PR agent, and an underwater photographer (which she relies upon to navigate the fluid global media landscape). With degrees in journalism and corporate communications, Kilah builds effective campaigns from the ground up through thoughtful listening and strategic planning skills. Kilah enjoys downtime with her family and tries to learn something new as often as possible. She is currently exploring the world through culinary experiment, attempting to prepare an authentic ethnic dish each week.Audience Development ManagerAs Mindful’s audience development manager, Ricardo combines 15 years of experience in digital media, project management, and community building. He works closely with the editorial and publishing teams to deliver Mindful to digital doorsteps across every platform. Ricardo has worked a variety of industries, always seeking out socially responsible employment where he can explore his fascination with how communication evolves in the modern world.Assistant Art DirectorBefore joining the Mindful team, Spencer worked as an independent designer and brand consultant with clients across North America in the not-for-profit and arts sectors. Having honed his skills in print shops across Canada, Spencer brings his passion for print design to every aspect of his life, hosting events in his free time just so he can design the poster. He also speaks French, and is a black-light enthusiast.Deputy Editor, Mindful DigitalAfter years of working in print and broadcast journalism, Stephany completed a master’s degree in journalism, focusing on how news organizations build digital spaces for their audiences.
